Opinion: The magic art of changing your mind
  + stars: | 2024-05-04 | by ( Opinion Tess Taylor | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
The poem shows a human speaker in the vulnerable act of changing their mind. Keats doesn’t want to be in the sky, eternally (and probably uncomfortably) unblinking, or even to be an “Eremite,” — which is just a fancy word for hermit. Keats doesn’t want to be distant at all, it turns out. It was the poem’s role to change its mind out loud, by setting out one way and then changing course. I’m not saying that poetry doesn’t have a place to hold our rage.

Read previewHenry Cavill has moved past his scrapped Superman return and onto new projects, but he can still crack jokes about what could have been. In his introductory remarks before a screening of his new Guy Ritchie movie "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" attended by Business Insider, Cavill made a subtle dig at his Man of Steel drama with DC Studios and WB. While praising his collaboration with Ritchie, Cavill noted that he'd worked with the director before, when he had a lead role in the 2015 spy film "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." I will, after all, not be returning as Superman," Cavill wrote. He also reunited with Ritchie already for the director's upcoming 2025 film "In the Grey," which will also re-team him with his "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" costar Eiza González.

NASA will launch sounding rockets and WB-57 high-altitude planes to conduct research on aspects of the sun and Earth that‘s only possible during an eclipse. During the 2017 eclipse that crossed the US, NASA and other space agencies conducted observations using 11 different spacecraft and two high-altitude planes. Three sounding rockets will launch from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on April 8 to study the eclipse. During the 2023 annular eclipse, instruments on the rockets measured sharp, immediate changes in the ionosphere. The jets have custom noses that can carry specialized scientific instruments.

NASA estimates that 215 million adults across the US saw the 2017 eclipse directly or virtually. This composite image shows the progression of a partial solar eclipse over Ross Lake in Northern Cascades National Park in Washington on August 21, 2017. A whopping 99% of those living across the US, including parts of Hawaii and Alaska, will be able to glimpse at least a partial solar eclipse without having to travel. April’s eclipse will also have longer period of totality than 2017 because of the moon’s proximity to Earth. The 2017 eclipse occurred as the sun neared solar minimum, when the star experiences less activity.

Some things have inexplicable staying power. And for nostalgic millennials, there is “Gilmore Girls.” The show ended its seven-year run on the WB and CW networks in 2007, yet viewers keep returning to the familiar comfort of the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Conn., where the series was set. Netflix recorded 500 million viewing hours for the show from January to June of last year, surpassing hits like “Seinfeld” and “Stranger Things,” and data released on Monday by the research firm Nielsen showed that “Gilmore Girls” was among the Top 10 most-watched shows across the major streaming platforms in 2023. The show, which concluded the month before the iPhone was introduced, is even finding a younger audience on TikTok, where users post scenes they love and argue about their favorite romantic partners for every character. Yanic Truesdale, who played the grumpy inn concierge Michel, lovingly called it “the show that will never die.”

Read previewMargot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were two of the most-discussed snubs of Tuesday's Oscar nominations. But another huge upset of the 96th Academy Award nods was the lack of recognition for "The Color Purple" remake. The Color Purple was going to be snubbed whether Taraji spoke out or not because a lot of the noms were voted on prior. Instead of negative press, "The Color Purple," among other contenders, was likely affected by different factors, including the SAG-AFTRA strike and its Christmas release. "By waiting until December to release 'The Color Purple,' they were late to the conversation," he added.

The New Space Race Is Causing New Pollution Problems

The high-altitude chase started over Cape Canaveral on Feb. 17, 2023, when a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched. Thomas Parent, a NASA research pilot, was flying a WB-57 jet when the rocket ascended past the right wing — leaving him mesmerized before he hit the throttle to accelerate. For roughly an hour, Mr. Parent dove in and out of the plume in the rocket’s wake while Tony Casey, the sensor equipment operator aboard the jet, monitored its 17 scientific instruments. Researchers hoped to use the data to prove they could catch a rocket’s plume and eventually characterize the environmental effects of a space launch.

UKRAINE DIVERSIONReuters spoke to around a half dozen Czech and Polish defence companies and government officials who described renewed efforts to carve out a bigger share of the African arms market as the Ukraine conflict diverts Russia's attention. Privately-held defence and civil manufacturing company Czechoslovak Group - the biggest Czech defence company - said its ability to maintain and modernize armoured vehicles using Soviet-era standards has helped it win business in Africa. ...in Poland where our stand was visited by numerous delegations from African countries that appeared here for the first time," WB Group spokesman Remigiusz Wilk said. The effort to supply Ukraine has pushed Czech companies to boost production and expand supply lines, something Czech-based independent defence analyst Lukas Visingr said has burnished the region's reputation. "The Czech arms industry is stepping up its efforts towards certain African countries still using Soviet-style equipment but who start to see Russia as a problematic supplier," Visingr said.

The company has also begun offering retired workers meals at the canteen so they can share knowledge of recently re-started lines producing Soviet-era ammunition for Ukraine, he added. Jiri Hynek, president and executive director of the Defence and Security Industry Association (DSIA) of the Czech Republic, told Reuters a lack of workers could push production out of central Europe. The association, which represents more than 160 companies, said exports accounted for around 90 percent of the industry's production of weapons and military-related supplies. Of that, Hynek estimated that supplies of military equipment to Ukraine accounted for 40% of exports. Dear Work It Out,I am tired of doing my team's busy work. I've been stuck with the thankless day-to-day tasks my colleague should be taking on because I'm faster at completing them. It's not work that I want to do or am passionate about and it's keeping me from the bigger projects I could be working on. Presumably my new co-worker will get up to speed at some point, but I'm worried I'll still be stuck with the busy work. They've (finally) gotten extra headcount or found a great candidate to help them achieve whatever goals they've put in place.

U.S. President Joe Biden on Thursday nominated former MasterCard CEO Ajay Banga to become president of the World Bank, hailing his business experience in his native India and his commitment to mobilizing private funds to expand financial inclusion and help developing countries grapple with climate change. "Ajay is uniquely equipped to lead the World Bank at this critical moment in history," Biden said in a statement. "Raised in India, Ajay has a unique perspective on the opportunities and challenges facing developing countries and how the World Bank can deliver on its ambitious agenda to reduce poverty and expand prosperity." Jan 31 (Reuters) - Warner Bros Discovery Inc (WBD.O) has reached deals with streaming services Roku Inc (ROKU.O) and Fox Corp's (FOXA.O) Tubi to license 2,000 hours of movies and TV series, as it becomes the latest media company to embrace free, ad-supported streaming TV. AMC Networks Inc (AMCX.O), Comcast Corp's (CMCSA.O) NBCUniversal and the National Hockey League have launched FAST channels over the last year.

Investors are more than happy when politicians bicker but don’t actually enact any new laws that may hurt corporate profits. If Republicans get the House, tax hikes are dead in the water,” said David Wagner, a portfolio manager with Aptus Capital Advisors. That’s because there are some areas of consensus for the White House and Republican lawmakers. Congress and the White House may spend more time bickering than trying to pass legislation. Ameriprise chief market strategist Anthony Saglimbene said on a conference call last week about the midterms that stocks have historically gone up after elections, no matter which party controls the White House and Congress.
CNN —Aaron Carter, a former child pop singer and younger brother of Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter, has died, a source close to the family told CNN. Carter, who first found fame as a boy with pop songs like “I Want Candy” and “Crush on You,” is survived by his 11-month-old son, Prince. The singer’s debut studio album, “Aaron Carter,” was released in 1997 and he performed as the opening act for the Backstreet Boys earlier that year. “There’s something I’d like to say that I feel is important for myself and my identity that has been weighing on my chest for nearly half of my life,” Carter wrote on Twitter. The singer later said in an interview that he doesn’t drink and denied that he has a drug problem, CNN previously reported.
